Hackleburg, Alabama is still working to rebuild what was so quickly destroyed on April 27, 2011.

It, like so many towns, will take years to rebuild and recover. But the process has been made a little easier thanks to people like all of you. You may never travel through this beautiful state, you may never know anyone else who has, yet you have given so much of yourself to its people.

Thank you for supporting this fundraising team and more importantly for helping put hope back into a community!

If you would still like to donate to help the city directly, please don't hesitate to do so.

We have some housekeeping to take care of this week.

Living in Tuscaloosa during all of this has been more humbling than I expected, even knowing how devastating it is. People from around the world have traveled through here just to lend a hand, share a story and rediscover the goodness of humanity. I want to thank ALL of you personally for bringing a renewed sense of hope, love, life and promise to a state that did not even know it needed it.

Before this all happened, the closest I'd ever come to getting physical with a guy was playing the board game Operation. Okay, so maybe that sounds pathetic, but it's not like there were any guys at my high school who I cared to share more than three words with, let alone my body.

Then I met Wes, a track star senior from across town. Maybe it was his soulful blue eyes, or maybe my hormones just started raging. Either way, I was hooked. And after a while, he was too. I couldn't believe how intense my feelings became, or the fact that I was seeing-and touching-parts of the body I'd only read about in my Gray's Anatomy textbook. You could say Wes and I experienced a lot of firsts together that spring. It was scary. It was fun. It was love.

Susan Gregg Gilmore was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1961. She began her writing career at the University of Virginia as a reporter for the school’s award-winning newspaper, The Cavalier Daily.

After graduating in 1983, she assumed a secretarial position with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

A year later, she entered graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Master of Arts in American Studies. She remembers asking a favorite professor about pursuing a writing career, and he told her she needed to live life first.

So she did. She married in 1985 and with her husband, Dan, has now raised three daughters.

She has made hundreds of cupcakes for bake sales, chaired school book fairs, volunteered in inner-city schools and taught Vacation Bible School all the while writing for papers including the Los Angeles Times, The Christian Science Monitor and the Chattanooga News-Free Press.

While on staff at the Free Press, Gilmore wrote a weekly column about parenting in the South.

Her first novel, Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen, is rooted in summer vacations spent with her paternal grandmother and grandfather, a revival-bred preacher, who after church on Sundays, always took his granddaughters to the Dairy Queen.

Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen (Shaye Areheart Books/Crown/2008) was called a “stand-out coming of age novel” by NPR’s Alan Cheuse and was a Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) 2009 Book Award Nominee.

Her second novel, The Improper Life of Bezellia Grove (Shaye Areheart Books/Crown/2010), was recently named a 2010 SIBA Summer OKRA Pick.

Gilmore currently lives in Chattanooga with her family.

The awesome Patrick Rothfuss has donated a signed copy of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle

It looks like a children's book. It has pictures. It has a saccharine-sweet title. The main characters are a little girl and her teddy bear. But all of that is just protective coloration. The truth is, this is a book for adults with a dark sense of humor and an appreciation of old-school faerie tales.

There are three separate endings to the book. Depending on where you stop, you are left with an entirely different story. One ending is sweet, another is horrible. The last one is the true ending, the one with teeth in it.

The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a dark twist on the classic children's picture-book. I think of it as Calvin and Hobbes meets Coraline, with some Edward Gorey mixed in.

Simply said: This is not a book for children.

Kathryn Tucker Windham was a pioneering female journalist in the South. By the close of the Civil Rights era, her hometown Selma, Alabama, newspaper had been taken over by corporate owners, and she sensed it was time to move on. She launched a new career as part social worker, part roving documentarian--photographing and writing about the people and places that fascinated her. When the national storytelling phenomenon took hold in the 1970s, she became a significant part of it. Then came a stint as essayist on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. She also wrote and performed a one-woman play, and served as consultant to public broadcasting. She is one of Alabama's best-known citizens, widely honored--yet she still keeps a busy schedule of public appearances, continuing to write, photograph, and tell stories. Seeking to put her worldly house in order, the nine autobiographical essays in this volume help tidy up the facts and folklore in her professional attic. In sum, Twice Blessed is an intimate visit with a generous spirit.

Kathryn Tucker Windham (June 2, 1918 – June 12, 2011)^[1] was an American storyteller, author, photographer, and journalist. She was born in Selma, Alabama and was raised in nearby Thomasville.

Windham got her first writing job at the age of 12, reviewing movies for her cousin's small town newspaper, The Thomasville Times. She earned a B.A. degree from Huntingdon College in 1939.^[2] Soon after graduating she became a reporter for the Alabama Journal. Starting in 1944 she worked for The Birmingham News. In 1946 she married Amasa Benjamin Windham with whom she had three children. In 1956 she went to work at the Selma Times-Journal where she won several Associated Press awards for her writing and photography. A collection of her photographs is on display at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. She died on June 12, 2011. The 2004 documentary film, Kathryn: The Story of a Teller, directed by Norton Dill, chronicles Windham's life and varied careers. (From Wikipedia)

This marvelous Alabama storyteller & writer passed away last weekend (June 12) at the age of 93.

She is one of the great personal influences in our own Courtney's journey through writing.

I am, or have been, everything from a professional Polynesian
dancer and fitness competitor to a mushroom farmer and

This is during the 2009 Alabama vs Tennessee game at Bryant Denny Stadium. It was October 24, perfect game day weather, Alabama was on the championship run...we were getting so close to having that perfect season. But a rival was trying to steal it away. We were only up by a few points...they had more yards than we did and to be honest it was a defensive game that did not show signs of either side giving up. Tennessee had the opportunity to make a 44 yd field goal - it would win the game...seconds on the clock...the stadium was so quiet...my husband had his head in his hands saying he could not believe our perfect season was going to be broken by Tennessee...I told him "No, we will block this. We will win this game. I believe in them." Honestly he still gets ragged by me for being the one who believed and had faith in their talents.

Mount Cody delivered a block that could be heard by every fan. When the thwack of the ball hit his arm the bomb dropped and the stadium erupted in celebration. We were still on our way...

To this day a picture of that block hangs in my house and on my wall at work. He reminds me to believe even when the odds are against you. You can still be a champion...oh and we were that year ;o)

Ok guys, I'm excited about this listing and I'm going to fight for these. We have a pair of cleats worn by Zac Etheridge, former Safety on the Auburn Tigers, in the 2011 Senior Bowl. They even have grass on the bottom!

I won these from Zac's Facebook page and they were supposed to be signed, but they weren't when I got them. They DO have his #4 written on the back.

These cleats are a FANTASTIC reminder of what you can accomplish if you put your heart and soul into everything you do. Zac went from one of the scariest injuries (I was there when it happened. Just..wow)...

To doing this just over a year later when Auburn played for the National Championship and won.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Zac for a brief moment, but he's a great guy, a true inspiration and one of the best role models.

All my life I’ve been fascinated with vampires, werewolves, witches and monsters. Maybe it was all those late night ‘Creature Features’, or maybe I’m just a bit odd. Either way, I just can’t put a good vampire or witch book down - magic, goth, wizards, and fairies - they’re all good.

I never intended on being an author. It had never my life’s dream to write or be published, but after reading a stack of books in June and July of 2009, I got an idea. ‘Hmmm. I wonder if I could write a book about vampires? There’d have to be vampires, werewolves, and maybe some witches just to make it interesting.’

And just to talk myself into it, I thought it might be a good way for my teenage daughter to see that if you set your mind to something, even a goofy old mom could accomplish something. Three weeks later ‘Blood of a Werewolf’ was complete.

Each piece is unique. The glass is hand cut, designed, and crafted by me in my shop in rural Tuscaloosa County. Each piece is kiln fired and annealed for long lasting durability, strength and beauty.
